Support your local high street? They don’t make it easy…

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

Shopkeepers love nothing better than having a good old whinge about “the internet”.

So why are so many of them responding by taking the mickey on pricing?

Twice in the last few weeks I have been into local shops looking for a Ukulele and a Brushcutter respectively.

On both occasions I was impressed by the product on show.

On both occasions I went home to search for reviews and do some price comparisons – only to find that both shops were charging significantly MORE than the manufacturers own RRP! By £7 for the Ukulele and £30 for the brushcutter!

Now, I don’t expect a bricks and mortar shop to be as cheap as the internet, but I buy locally for the service and to support the local economy. But I’m buggered if I’m going to pay MORE than the RRP to do that! I don’t like being treated like a mug because I happened to use my feet to shop rather than a mouse.

So that’s two more businesses on my “won’t shop there” list.

PS Actually, it’s thrice in the last couple of months… was also looking at flat screen TVs in a “local” shop, he was quick to offer me a deal on their soon-to-be-discontinued ex-display model… suffice to say that even his “deal” was the same price as a brand-new model from John Lewis. So that’s three on the list since Easter!

Turns out that the latest firmware for my Sansa Fuze MP3 player enforces new EU legislation on a “safe” maximum volume.

Which is basically inaudible.

Good news though… simply “Reset Factory Settings” and change your location from “Europe” to “Rest of World” and the “Volume – High” option returns!

A brief product review… Amica AWCT 10L washing machine

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

Pros…

- Seems to get the clothes clean
- Must be dirt cheap otherwise the landlord would not have bought it

Cons…

- Degree in linguistics required to fully comprehend the instruction manual
- Wide variety of programs but hard to work out exactly what each one is for
- Door lock is very flimsy and I’m surprised it seals in the water
- Water does not drain out of conditioner tray (odd design)
- Damn thing has started to flood the floor when filling! Water comes out of the soap tray. Probably the pipes into the machine are getting clogged up with old detergent (maybe also those liquitab wrappers), cold fill means that it is never cleared out. So I have tried pouring some hot water down there. Another curiosity is that the pump filter (which is easy to access, rather than hidden away) is missing on the machine, which was brand new.

Oddly enough our last machine (Ariston Washer Dryer from Currys – piece of junk – did neither at all well) also went through a phase of water coming out of the tray. Turned out that it was a wet wipe (or similar) that had got through the drum seal and blocked the pump. Had to take the cover off the machine to get it.

It’s a thrill a day in our household I can tell you!

Seat Ibiza dashboard repair

Very strange problem with the gf’s car today…

Failed its MOT earlier on a few things, one of which was a non-functioning dashboard tell-tale for the right indicator.

Brought the car home, assuming it would be an easy bulb change, and I could do it myself to save a big labour charge.

Got the instrument panel out pretty easily (thanks to the excellent source of information that is www.seatcupra.net), and tested the bulb. It was fine. Swapped the bulb over with a known good one and still the tell-tale wouldn’t illuminate.

Time for a bit of a head scratch. This could be expensive…

Used my trusty multimeter to check the voltage across the instrument panel connector. Thankfully, the current was getting through, so no problem within the wiring loom. This meant there was a problem somewhere in the instrument panel circuit board.

Now my guess is that this would be a very expensive part to replace. So I went through the PCB, checking for continuity. Sure enough there was a break in the circuit. Strangely, I couldn’t see any damage to the circuit tracks.

Partly inspired by the suggestion of the chap in the motor factors, I decided to solder a cable across the broken track, using some thin bell wire from Maplin that has been sitting around in my toolbox for years.

Fortunately the break was near the edge of the PCB and easy to reach. My soldering skills are far from exceptional but it all seems to work!

All in all a very satisfying afternoon’s work, which would have cost a bomb if I had left it to the garage – who probably have no interest in fault-finding a PCB, so that would have been a new instrument panel. And I don’t know how good availability is for a ’96 diesel!

FIA defer 'winner-takes-all' system – Planet-F1 News – from planet-f1.com

FIA defer ‘winner-takes-all’ system – Planet-F1 News – from planet-f1.com.

Great news!

I feel I should take a little of the credit for this decision – after all, I blogged against the “wins” championship, and a day later, the FIA “delayed” it. Coincidence? I think not!

PS First post using “Press This”…

F1 championship to be decided by "wins"

Much has been written on this already by greater minds than me – so I’ll keep it brief.

No, just no.

Thanks.

Failure to connect to database server

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

Quick tip – if you are having occasional problems connecting to the database server with your WordPress site, change the DB_HOST in your config.php file from “localhost” to the more specific “127.0.0.1″.

PS first time using the QuickPress window in 2.7.1 – let’s see how it works!

Wow! A government helpline that actually works!

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

I’m not normally one to get excited by things the government does to try and “help” us poor subjects – usually it becomes a completely worthless fudge – just look at NHS Direct and HIPs for proof.

But I have to give credit where credit is due and say that the phone service for renewing your car tax is just brilliant. It only takes a few minutes (unlike the half-hour queues in the Post Office) and best of all you don’t even need to find your MOT and insurance – they are checked automatically. Yay!

If you didn’t already know, phone 0870 850 4444 when you get your V11 reminder through the post.

Unexpected visitor to the garden this morning…

Friday, August 8th, 2008

Certainly wasn’t expecting to see a bird of prey in the city! Wish I had got a picture of it, but the visit only lasted a couple of seconds. It swooped in, sat down, looked around, and swooped back out again.

It was a larger-than-usual brown bird with piercing eyes and a small sharp beak. From looking around on t’internet I think it was a female sparrowhawk – here is a pic I stole from the BBC website…

Much more interesting than a pigeon!

Much more interesting than a pigeon!

Perhaps it is nesting in the graveyard next door? I’ll keep an eye out!

The difference between the North East and South East

Saturday, August 2nd, 2008

It boils down to weather.

North East – Summer lasts 2 days.

South East – Summer lasts 2 weeks.

Then you get an almighty thunderstorm. I’m watching it right now, flashes of light, piercing cracks from the sky, torrents of water.
